Kid author uses illness as inspiration

While most people would like to improve the lives of those around them, that instinct usually isn't developed by the age of seven.

Kate Lilja is an exception.

Lilja, now 13, was born with a heart condition that kept her in the neonatal intensive care unit for a short period of time. She was in and out of hospitals for most of her early childhood and says her exposure to this lifestyle led her to write a book entitled I Love to Be Me when she was seven.

Lilja wrote her book to reach out to children who face similar circumstances.

"I wanted to draw pictures about kids in general, in order to help them so they wouldn't feel the same way that I did," said Lilja.

Forced to cope with a heart condition, Lilja said she always felt out of place. But with advice from her mother, Cathy Shaughnessy, Lilja realized everybody is different in their own way.

"Everybody has a challenge, and that's what makes us all so special and unique," Shaughnessy said.

"Some people are in a wheelchair, some people have a different skin colour and that's what makes us who we are."
